Skin Care

jmk July 4, 2012 14:21
Ok as I have been spending half my life on the internet reading and researching hair and skin care for my mixed race DD''s I thought I''d start another thread on skin care, seperate to the one I started about hair care, although a lot of the products I''ve been reading about can be used for both. Will post some of the recipes and hopefully some of you other ladies will share your finds/disasters too. And if my laptop dies as my last one did, at least all the info will be on here for me to refer back to.

Deep Skin Conditioner4oz 100% Shea Butter2oz 100% Coconut Oil (solid at room temp)2 tablespoons extra virgin Olive Oil1 teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil5 drops of lavender oil, if desired to mask the woody smell of the Shea butter.Place ingredients in a deep bowl and blend together using a hand blender or whisk. Leave to set in the fridge until semi solid, about 15 mins. Blend again until thick and creamy and spoon into a lidded jar or container. Leave to set in the fridge until it reaches your preferred consistancy. Does not need to be kept in the fridge as coconut oil acts as a preservative and has antibacterial qualities as does the lavender oil. This moisturiser is great on dry feet heels and elbows, can also be used as a hair conditioner. Lighter Every Day Mix3 tablespoons of Coconut Oil1 teaspoon of Argon Oil1 teaspoon of Jojoba Oil1 teaspoon of Castor OilBlend as above. Mixture is runnier than deep conditioner and is suitable for using in hair every day.

Eczema Cream4 teaspoons of unrefined 100% Shea Butter2 teaspoon of sweet Almond OilA few drops of Lavender essential oil Place Shea Butter in a clean bowl and place bowl in a larger bowl with very hot or boiling water in it, to melt the shea butter. Should only take a couple of minutes. (Don't do it in a microwave as it destroys the antibacterial qualities of the butter). Add the almond oil and blend together using a hand held blender or whisk. (I got mine from Te***s for £4.75). Place bowl in freezer for around 10-15 mins until set. Blend again adding Lavender oil if desired (Shea butter has a very strong woody type of smell, not unpleasant, but a bit strong, lavender masks the smell). Blend until it is thick and creamy. Spoon into a lidded jar or container. Use on affected area as often as you think it is necessary.I have been using this cream on DD's eczema for a week now and her skin is almost perfect. I was so sick of the Dr. giving me steroid creams all the time, which is why I researched making my own cream and although it is early days it looks so much better as all the ingredients are natural.

Palmers Cocoa Butter, every morning without fail. It's finally starting to be available in major supermarkets & chemists rather than just 'ethnic' shops. They even sell it in Boots thesedays!

Yes but Palmers Cocoa Butter is full of preservatives and additives, scents etc, if you make it yourself at least you know what 's in it and once you have bought all the ingredients it is so much cheaper as it lasts for ages and makes loads. You can buy 100% Cocoa Butter and substitute it for the Shea Butter in the above recipe. All of these ingreiients are readily available from Amazon. Why give your money to the manufacturers when you an make it yourself for half he price.

Think when buting on Amazon it's best to read the reviews to see which one you think is best. I got mine in Holland and Barrett.

Have been looking to find some deodorants for my DD's (11&12) and I'm a bit concerned about them using normal deodorants with aluminimum and the cancer risks, so I've been doing reseach again and have found a reciepe for a natural deodorant. I haven't tried it yet as I have to buy some of the ingredients, but I thought I'd post it on here and will try it out and let you know if it is successful.Natural Deodorant3 tablespoons Coconut Oil 6 tablespoons Cornstarch or Arrowroot6 tablespoons Baking Soda5 drops of tea tree essential oil (antiseptic, but I'm not too keen on smell)15 drops of lemon essential oil, or peppermint oil (to mask smell of tea tree)2 - 3 clean empty stick type deodorant containersPlace cornstarch and baking soda in a clean bowl and mix with a metal spoonAdd melted coconut oil, a bit at a time, and mix by pressing down with the back of the spoon. It should come together a bit, but should not be too wet. Try squeezing some in the palm of your hand. Should form into a dryish snowball, powdery but not liquidy.Pack into deodorant container pressing down until compacted inside. Fill to the top and store overnight in fridge until coconut oil sets again.Apply lightly to underarm area after showering. Can be kept at room temperature
