Our experience of the adoption journey as a gay couple

2fathers February 2, 2016 16:10
Hello I wanted to share our experience with others who are thinking of going through the adoption journey and may be particularly interesting to those who are LGBT as we are a gay married couple. This is a repost (I previously accidentally deleted my account). We have been placed with our son (7 YO) for over 7 weeks, our adoption officially journey started early March 2015 and our son joined us in December, yep it took us 10 months from start to placement which is very quick and could not have really been quicker. Throughout the approval process the Social Workers and other adopters and preadopters have only been supportive. We have not received any form of discrimination and our sexuality was barely mentioned. We made sure we used as many resources as we could and took the advice from this forum and New Family Social (LGBT adoption charity) to read up on the children in care, meet adopters and think hard about what you are really wanting to commit to. Our journey really started 4 years ago when we first really started to read about what adoption would be like and if we was right to be parents. We also made sure to meet other LGBT parents and their children and learn how little having same sex parents really made a difference to a child. Our child is fantastic, was was prepared and warned by all involved to make sure we was ready and able to cope with his many behaviours and has accepted us from day 1. Having 2 fathers may be more apparent when he is a little older but right now he is happy to have parents in a loving, stable and secure environment. Good luck to anyone who is going the adoption process or thinking about it. It is a stressful, traumatic rollercoaster but for us it has been worth it.

That's great to here and reassuring for two would-be fathers who go to panel in a few weeks' time.
