DD and her violin

Duckling November 19, 2012 09:34
5 years ago we went to a development concert at DD''s weekend music school. The idea was for all the year 3 string players (who had just started learning) to play with some of the more experienced groups and also to listen to a county group and a senior strings group. DD was in amongst the year 3 violins and it has to rank as one of the most humiliating and toe curling evenings I have ever had to endure. She was totally incapable of concentrating either when she was playing, or when anyone else was. Somehow she managed to poke her bow above peoples heads and wave it around bashing people and causing havoc... in the short time since I had left her for the final rehearsal she had also managed to chew a hole in her jumper and her hair was a mess. She stuck out like a sore thumb, the only out of sync child in a room full of immaculate little darlings. The only good thing was that, at the end of the evening, she had obviously spotted some of the girls in the senior strings using vibrato (glad I spelt that right) and said to me that she wanted to be able to do that wobbly thing with her hand like they did...Fast forward five years - to a similar development concert for year 3''s and upwards. This time there are no out of sync year 3s and they all behaved impeccably. Also behaving impeccably is DD in the middle of her senior strings group. I struggle to spot her immaculately groomed blond head amoungst the other violinists as she bows in perfect time, completely and totally wrapped in the music. At the end I ask her if she enjoyed herself and if she had spotted me in the audience. Yes, she had had a great time, but had not managed to see me in the audience as she had to concentrate very hard - she plays quite loudly and everyone was relying on her to keep her group in time! I was so proud of her. She was not the star of the show by any means, but she was totally part of the show, and set an excellent example to the younger ones there. She does a mean vibrato too now!Duckling

Lovely message, we have still some time to go, my youngest started suzuki violin a few weeks ago. First he loved, loved, loved the violin, now he hate, hate, hate the violin. Not that that makes any difference to me, he has to play it for at least a year before I evaluate.(single mum to 2 boys 6 and 11)
