my daughters fears

gimli September 8, 2009 12:41
hi quite a while ago we took my daughter ice skating and she loved it although the co ordination was a prob she had fun.until she cut her hand on the ice (and a speed skater going to fast)then she went into melt down mode screaming full pelt.some glue and a lot of anxiety later all sorted.just started back at school and guess what they have an 8 wk skating free my daughter was distraught last night at the thought of going again.and i know your all thinking well simple say she can not go.my problem is my daughter will be equally distraught each time they go without her..do i say she can go and only go on the ice if happy to do so and risk a meltdown.or should i just put my foot down and say no.my daughter has (adhd asd dyspaxia and fas.)all toghether meaning a very challanging little one.my husband says let her go and see but im so worried she will feel pressured onto the ice.i can not go with her as im already at the school helping the swimming lesson

This sounds just like my son - he can't cope doing something but then can't cope with not doing it! Its a no-win situation really! My only suggestion is that you explain to the school and say you would like her to go along but not skate unless she is absolutely 100% sure about it. Also, I know you say you cannot go because you already go swimming but could you maybe just attend the first session?Could you visit the ice skating rink beforehand and just watch? Hopefully you wont see any accidents and she may build a tiny bit of confidence.Hope you get it sorted
