Adopting with zero hour contract

March 7, 2021 20:02

I currently work in care on a zero hour contract. I took this job as I thought it would be beneficial to have a flexible job once adoption leave is over, and I just didn't want to be a teacher any more! I will be the primary caregiver and will need to go back to work for 15 hours a week (worst case scenario) after 12 months adoption leave.

We are currently in stage 1, waiting for my probation to end, and our social worker has queried my job as it means I am not guaranteed any work and therefore our financial plan could be picked apart by panel. I am panicking so much as this could mean I have made things so much harder for us!

Both myself and my manager know that there is always loads of work in care but I suppose this still isn't a guarantee and I don't know what I can do to make things appear more stable.

Has anyone else gone through the process on a zero hours contract?

Would your manager/HR department be willing to write a letter that explains the nature of a zero hour contract in the care sector? We have done so for employees in the past - confirming average hours worked per week over X period and expectation that there would be no change to the availability of work on your return.
