How long between #1 and #2?

Mrs MR August 22, 2013 22:24
Adoption Order now granted ()...Celebration Day to follow soon.Minnie seems so settled, and we''re now thinking forward to #2. Our ex-SW advised us to wait 2 years before applying. (I assume she meant 2 years from initial placement.) Would be interested to know if this is the norm??Thanks in advance

Possibly not the most ideal person to respond as I guess our experience isn't typical but - we started the process for no 2 when our son was around 18 months old. Approved when he was 2 but had a lengthy wait before our second son was placed. 15 months after he was placed we were approached about taking biglys sibling - 5 months later she was home too. So 2 new babies within 20 months! !7 years later we're just about getting some normality, albeit with 2 asd children whose issues didn't become apparent for quite some time.

Our LA say unless a sibling, you have to wait 2 years from AO

Ours was also 2 yrs from AO, plus at least a 2 year age gap but preferably 3 year gap between the children.Even though the process takes time they still would not let you start for 2 years . Even though by the time you have finish the process may of taken almost 2 years you could still not start before that. ( sometimes if taking on a sibling at a later stage you did not have to wait this lenght of time.)

Hello mrs MR,It varies from agency to agency. We felt ready to start the whole process up again after our son had been home just over a year. We contacted 3 LA's in our area (London) and 2 of them had no problem assessing us immediately. We were approved and matched in just under 8 months. Our new LO will be moving in 22 months after our son moved in.There is certainly no hard and fast rule about when you can re-applly or how big the age gap should be between LO's, sibs or not.Hope this helps.Witch

The rule for my LA is one year after the adoption order, but they can change the rules to suit depending on how many children they have at the time!

We've been told we can start the process when little boy is of an age where a newly placed child would be 2 years younger - taking into account that it should now be 4-6 months for approval for a 2nd adoption, and taking into account the age range we'd be looking for 2nd time around (i.e. we don't have to wait till he's 2 years older than the maximum age we'd go for, to start the process).
