Can people with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder adopt, if it is under control?

many years ago I met an adopter who had bi polar so in answer to your question yes you can. Speak with LA or VA to see what they say.

It will depend on your circumstances, the level of insight into your illness, your support system, your partner, your experience, etc. It is unlikely to be easy as having psychiatric illness is one of the main reasons children get removed from birth parents, so you need to present a stong case. As April writes it is possible for some people, but not easy.

When I was training to be a teacher there was a girl on my course with Bi-polar. She had to wait right until the last minute to find out whether she had a place on the course because of her condition. After checking with her doctors, support network etc that the condition could be managed, she was allowed. She trained alongside me to teach primary. She became a fantastic teacher, went on to have children and, as far as I know, she is still teaching. It is obviously possible for people with Bi-polar to safely work with young children so why not adopt. The key for this girl was proving that her condition was managed through medication and that she had a strong support network. Hopefully you will be able to show this too. A xx
