before electricity - year 1 topic

Ninny has been given her topic sheet for after the half term, and this is it. I can''t help thinking that this is going to go straight over her head. She is having trouble focussing on the here and now, let alone thinking about a time when she didn''t exist.Did anyone else feel this way? I know it''s standard across schools. I know washie did it at the same age - well, actually he was already 6 whereas ninny is only just 5 - but I knew he would learn something from it. I also know that they bring family trees into this topic, so any hints on how to get over this.(And, what with us having electrical problems recently - going days without TV, hot water, phone calls, pc, etc. - I told her she knows a bit about this. She replies "Yes, it''s not good, cos I''ve had to play all the time." Boy, has this girl got problems )

Family trees when learning about how things were done before we had electricity!! Cannot see the connection myself and I speak as a teacher. Could they not just keep to the point and look at the subject of the topic? Now there's a novel idea. I think some schools do family trees because the teacher can't think of something more original but it seems particularly pointless for this topic. I realise they may be comparing then and now but still cannot see that work on a family tree is absolutely necessary for children to learn about what life was like before electricity. Can you have a word with the teacher about it or is that a no-no in Ninny's school? There are so many other great activities they couild do instead.
