Adopting from Colombia

crisspe August 25, 2010 23:44
Has anyone adopted from Colombia? We have strong links and really REALLY like to adopt from there, but we can''t find any information on British/Colombian adoptions. Also we are not infertile or have any kids, would that be against us when we apply?

A year tomorrow - this is how long ago we were approved. Yet still no child, no yet even in waiting list. There is always something else, and every "something" takes two, three months... can't be doing with this any more! The latest "something" is a MMPI psychometric test. How nice of them to mention the requirement AFTER we have submitted all the documentation to DfE and COO, convinced we had EVERYTHING they wanted. Have contacted a million Psychologists, nobody knows how to do it or how to interpret it. Have already asked SW, NHS, GP, BPS, ICA, DfE and nothing, no body knows. Tried to do it on-line but can't be done. Tried to do it abroad but it won't count. I can sit here feeling sorry for myself and write a whole assay about it, but I wont. I just want to ask:Does anyone know (or are you) a psychologist who know how to do/interpret the MMPI test?Any info will be most appreciated.

I'm sorry I can't help from personal experience. You might be able to get more help on UKAO (it's a yahoo group for people adopting from overseas). Here's the link:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UKAO/?yguid=211057866Good luck and I hope you don't have too long to wait.

Hi,If you can't do the test, just contact the adoption authority, find out what are they looking for with this test, then contact a psychologist here in the UK and see if there is another test which is close. If you find it, contact Adoption Authority in Colombia again and tell them you couldn't have the other one done, because it's not done in the UK, but this other one is done.I know some families who did it with the Philippines and had no problems. (I don't know anyone adopting from Colombia).Best of luck,S

So sorry you are having these difficulties. For us, it was about 9 months from approval to our paperwork going live overseas, and another 8 months before we had a match. So we totally sympathise! It was very demoralising to have to redo our medicals etc. and have an annual review as things had expired. The Yahoo group should help you but the MMPI can be administered by a variety of types of psychologists including clinical psychologists, and there are a lot of these in private practice, so it's worth approaching some.If you go herehttp://www.bps.org.uk/bpslegacy/dcpand put your area, and I'd recommend selecting Adult under Who Is This For, and Personality Assessment under Assessment, you should find someone willing to work with you. You may have to email a bunch of people to find someone but perhaps just copy and paste all their email addresses into one email.Hope that's helpful.

PS I should say, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to get the MMPI done here, it's just a case of finding a psychologist who actually has a copy - I'm assuming the psychologists you have contacted just don't have a copy? It is not a hard test to administer and the psychologist will not have had to do a special training course (the usual reasons psychologists don't offer particular tests are either they can't access a copy or they haven't done the very expensive training).

Hello everyoneI haven't visited the boards in a long time. I just wanted to share some good news: we finally managed to find someone who did the psychometric test for us (not only one but three) and issued a very nice report. We sent the report to DfE a few weeks ago and today I received a letter from them confirming they sent it to Colombia yesterday. Yei! I'm glad to be one step closer, at last! 28 months on, I wonder how much longer until we bring our baby home...
