Panorama documentary on adoption

Press and PR Officer January 23, 2012 15:01
Dear All, Please see an email below from a Panorama producer hoping to put together another documentary about adoption. Kind regards, Erika PenningtonPress & PR Officer FROM THE PRODUCERS OF “THE TRUTH ABOUT ADOPTION” – We would like to explore the idea of follow up documentary from the adopters perspective, particularly as the government plans to overhaul the current system.I am particularly interested in talking to prospective adopters who are at the end of their assessment process and are waiting to go to panel for approval and those who have just started the family finding process, have been waiting for a while or have just had a child/children placed.I am also interested in talking to families who have grown up children who have been contacted by their birth family through Facebook. There are understandably a lot of anxieties about talking to the “media” about your experiences but please be reassured that all conversations are in the strictest of confidence.I also hope that our previous film goes someway in showing you that we treat everyone we work with, with dignity and respect and that there is a way to tell important and powerful human stories without sacrificing the children and families involved. For example we were able to tell Katie and Chloe’s story without compromising their adoptive placement. We were also able to identify Katie and Chloe’s sister who has been adopted and her adoptive mum – there were no repercussions.Taking part in a documentary to highlight vital societal issues is not for everyone, but in my experience there are families/situations with a unique set of circumstances that allow us to make films of this nature, to highlight issues and stimulate debate, as was the case with all the children and families featured.Another example is that we had to apply to the family courts to broadcast Coner’s story before family court proceedings had concluded, (usually this isn’t permitted) which was granted by the Court because we had shown both sides of the story without judgment.I hope this helps allay a few of your initial fears, and that you may consider sharing your thoughts with us.I look forward to hearing from you, my email address is below.Best wishes and many thanks for your time.Clare JohnsProducer---- EMAIL REDACTED ----

i would be too scared to talk in case it highlighted us and the prospective match... i preer radio where there is a degree of anonymity.. i think it should consider all perspectives and focus on the need for adoption support.gx

I think the best group to focus on is adopters who have children placed over 3 years. They have a lot to say.

Dear Mz JohnsI am one of those adopters whose child was contacted via facebook and this ended up with my daughter being sexually abused again by two of her birth family members. I would give an interview off camera but could not do so on camera as I need to protect my daughters identity. Echoing my friend meno's comment can we not call it the truth about adoption, how about the complexity of adoption a modern story. I await your reply. Just to give you some background I am a professional with a CAMHS background, my guess though is this may put you off. Many years ago we applied to be part of "love is not enough" and were interviewed by the producer I think it was BBC but we were viewed as not a typical adoptive couple due to our professional background. Any way offer is there and would like to bring the other side of the story to the public's attention. All the very bestHomerton
