Keeping a record of pre-application prep?

Teenybeans October 26, 2017 15:05
I'm wondering how relevant it would be to the adoption approval process for my husband and I to keep a log of pre-application research, volunteering, or courses we do, maybe in a tabulated journal format? And maybe our responses to our learning or development in some areas? If anyone has done this, was it useful and how did you structure it?

Yes! Definitely. I would say keep it electronically so that you can copy/paste and email if you needed to. I say this because our social worker asked us to log and then submit a list of all the books we read, seminars we attended, documentaries/you tube programmes we watched. I’m guessing she used this as part of her PAR writing/evidencing based only on what she told our referees. I kept notes of the main points, mainly for memory recall purposes should I have to demonstrate the learning outcomes. One thing I’ve also done is to write the reasons I would revisit the book/programme either pre if post-placement - or not as the case may be! I can only hope this might be useful to us in the future should we need to. I hope that helps.

That is really helpful, thanks! :D I just don't want to begin doing a pile of work that I later forget because I didn't bother keeping records, but at the same time I didn't want to throw a heap of useless records at them if they wouldn't be interested and seem too desperate, you know?

Any self reflection work you can evidence can only go in your favour. We were deferred the first time we went to panel and afterwards we decided to keep a journal of each month, anything we did and felt in relation to our journey. Sailed through second panel and they couldn't praise us enough for that. So it sounds like a good idea for you to do! Good luck :-)

Aww, that's good to hear and I'm so glad it went smoothly for you in the end! I just feel as though using this pre-application time wisely could make the process smoother when we are ready to put in our application. My husband's research is so different to mine: He's deeply visual and practical and prefers video seminars, slideshow presentations, and audiobooks, whereas I prefer reading research papers, books, and journals. It gives us plenty of notes to compare and shows that we are both independently deeply interested in adoption I suppose.
