Books for young adopted children with two mums

EllenSug February 4, 2019 09:24
Hi, I apologise if this has already been posted - I did have a looked through the forum to see if I could spot something similar first but couldn't see anything. Does anyone know of any books for young adopted children that are specifically about adoption/adoption process/being adopted where the parents are two Mums? We already have a birth child and we do have quite a few books that have two mums or that highlight that families come in different forms but I'm specifically looking for something that relates to adoption. Also...is there an LGBT Facebook group for adoptive parents does anyone know? Thank you! Ellen

Hi, we used 'Mummy, Mama and Me' when our eldest came home. It focused more on having 2 mums as opposed to the adoption process. Our eldest much preferred his life story book to explain adoption rather than anything else - however both of our kids LOVE 'The Lambaroo' which is about adoption, but in a very 'storified' way - they both get excited when they read it as they compare themselves to the main character. There isn't a fb group as such for LGBT adoptive parents (that I know of), however have you heard of New Family Social? They are a UK group for LGBT foster carers and adopters and have lots of events, resources etc.

Hiya Our copy of Mommy, Mama and Me was very well-used too - the best thing I've found for toddlers but not adoption specific. Josh and Jaz Have Three Mums is specifically about adopted children in a lesbian-led family https://www.amazon.co.uk/Josh-Jaz-have-three-mums/dp/1905664125 In no particular order, we also have: Todd Parr books - The Feelings Book and the one about Being Different - the imagery includes apparently two-mum families Picnic in the Park - this has a wide range of family structures depicted https://corambaaf.org.uk/books/picnic-park Finding a family for Tommy - really charming for young kids, uses cute animals (does Tommy want a penguin family? No!) and then ends up with a diverse range of adults depicted, so you can talk about different family structures https://corambaaf.org.uk/books/finding-family-tommy We also have One Dad Two Dad Brown Dad Blue Dad (I like it as I have a taste for the absurd, but perhaps that's just me), the one about the penguins raising a chick, which is OK if a little laboured. New Family Social is out there as a group for LGBT parents. I used to be a member. They do charge a subscription - I'm not sure what the core purpose is now (they started out being a meet up group and generally campaigning to change attitudes around gay people - mainly gay men - adopting). I think they organise meet ups and socials around the country, they tend to be more concentrated in London and urban areas and, back when I was a member, had more men than women, but certainly some lesbian families there.
