'Staying Put' in Universal Credit area

BermudaBlue September 29, 2018 18:24
Just wondering if any other foster carers in Universal Credit areas are doing 'Staying Put' for foster children who have reached 18. We are in a universal credit area, and having a nightmare with the housing element of universal credit. Send me a private message if so. We gave up fostering to let our YP stay with us - and in so doing have lost our support network. TIA

Our background was fostering and we found that we could access help and advice from.the national board no matter what because the issue arose through fostering. Also the Citizens Advice Bureau may be able to advise you. I know what you mean about losing support systems ... We became Special Guardians and found that it was not understood or supported at the time. Hope things work out for you. Does the Pathway Plan give any help? Johanna

Thanks Johanna, Which National board? We were members of Fostering Network when we were fostering, but not covered now. I may have to try citizen's advice. The leaving care worker doesn't seem to know what to do, and the job centre didn't have a person appointed to deal with care leavers (they should have done) and have given the role to an advisor who has had no training, but just because he is Special Guardian to his nephew (they thought that this qualified him for the job!) Staff and leaving care worker would have known what to do under the old system, but as UC is new here it's all a minefield.
