Rejected for match (COVID-19 given as reason)

Jonathan & Mark March 31, 2020 00:03

Last week at had a meeting with LO's social worker and manager. Even with the current situation it was deemed important enough to allow for a face to face meeting instead of Skype.

The meeting seemed really positive and additional documents got sent over to us the same evening (phycological report and health reports) neither of which revealed anything unexpected.

Today we were told by our social worker that they aren't pursuing the match and gave 'timing' as the reason. Basically because his social worker is leaving post and the Corona virus at the moment. They have decided that long term foster care will now be his plan after all. In the meeting we were told that long term foster care wouldn't be with his current placement.

We are currently feeling very lost and angry as we don't feel we have been given a proper explanation as to why we aren't a match. Has this ever happened to anyone else.

If we aren't a match for a reason we would like to know why, and don't feel that's an unreasonable request?

Jonathan and Mark,

That is appalling. I am so sorry to hear that. It is completely unacceptable that social workers should not tell you the truth or attempt to mislead you about the reasons for not going ahead with the match or what the plan is for the child you were to be matched with.

Coronavirus is going to be with us for a while in waves I imagine and it can not be used as a reason not to go ahead with a match without condemning a whole cohort of children currently in foster care from ever being raised by adoptive parents.

Do call Adoption UK. Their helpline is very good and they will advise you on your approach to social workers.

Best wishes

Jonathan
