In praise of period pants...

clr1 March 12, 2019 21:23
Saw a mention in a recent thread about periods and helping our ADs manage these successfully. Dealing with periods is hard, especially when these start early. The average age for the menarche is now under 13 years old in the UK, and when my AD started we had to cope with sensory issues of sanitary pads etc and major challenges of organisation. Nearly 2 years on, AD is coping much, much better. One of the really great changes in recent years for women is the availability of period pants. I discovered these as part of a 'plastic-free periods' campaign last year, and bought AD a couple of pants from Modibodi (there are other providers around with good reviews too). These are initially expensive but quickly deliver savings, are better for the environment and have completely solved AD's major difficulties. There is really no need to fiddle around with sanitary towels any more.

I saw these and couldn't imagine they would actually work... but could potentially be very useful here... do they cope with a fairly heavy flow and stay leak free? How often does she need to change them?? So full of questions!!

Yes, they really do work. AD wears these for a whole day - needs a bit of a reminder to change them before going to bed. No leakage problems so far (she has a set of heavy flow days, and another for lighter days). My main issue now is persuading her to rinse them and bring them downstairs to be washed, rather than leave them to fester in a corner of the bathroom.

We tried them - have to say I wasn’t keen. I opted for wingless pads and a whole load of cheap black knickers which I could bin if necessary. As well as a very detailed visual, reminders, an on board supportive school ... and the pill for mood swings and heavy flow! Working for us!

We have also gone for the cheap black pants option - and heavy flow pads - AD is much older now but has always changed fairly well - she now has a hormone free medication - tranexamic acid (strawberry flavoured apparently) to reduce flow as she was getting anaemic and doesn’t tolerate iron well and didn’t want hormone ones. She takes 3 a day for the first 3/4 days - seems to work well
