Dual Nationality and Adopting

tck January 2, 2014 22:13
I am a dual national with America. While I was born in England and lived here as a a young girl I also grew up across military bases in Europe and spend ten years in the US as an adult. My husband and I have been living in England for the last two and a half years with our children, with no plans to move, and want to adopt. Anyone know of any cases similar to ours? I would assume it might make it a more tedious process with accumulating references and background checks, but other than that would agencies turn us away for having lived many places in our past due to history as military families?

it will add complications as you said but shouldn't preclude you from the process no. you will need to work though to prove you intend to stay put in this country for some time and to prove that you have solid support networks where you are now (even if we all know those can change or disappear once the children are actually placed!). I grew up in a similar fashion to yourself and spent 5 years abroad as an adult. biggest challenge was getting the police checks for abroad and remembering addresses.

also, (for fostering but similar process) I had to give a kind of time line for my life from 0-45 (age at the time!) and that was a real challenge, remembering rough dates and where I was and why!

Lol - my first thought when I read your post, tck, was total horror! It had nothing to do with your question but just reminded me of the nightmare I had trying to remember all my addresses - & I've only ever lived in the UK!! As LOB says, I'm sure it shouldn't be an issue as long as you have a stable base now with a good support network. Good luck

I know loads of people with dual nationality who have adopted - though they all choose to live here. I think that the issue is whether you will want to move abroad again in the future.
