Physical disabilities

Griffik November 20, 2009 13:24
My husband and I both have a physical disability. I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy and am wheelchair bound. My husband has Cerebral Palsy and uses sticks, and a scooter outside to get around. Is it worth us applying to become adoptive parents or would our disabilities stop us?

Hi No, social services are not going to discriminate openly about your physical disabilities. You are welcome to apply but I would be really choosy about who to apply with and sometimes it is the voluntary agencies who are more rounded in their outlook and can see the pluses that disabled people can bring (ability to think on the spur of the moment, change tack to get round things etc) which are all invaluable. You will need to show that you have very robust support networks around you. If you have PAs in, they will need to be CRB'd etc. Parenting is a pretty physical job, so before they even ask, get some plans in place for taking the child swimming, football etc.My 3 are very used to my chair and the house adaptations etc.I would also make it explicit what your opinions are on "child carers". In my opinion it is not appropriate to use a child in this way, I have never done it, but especially for a child who is vulnerable because of a poor early start it is not appropriate and it might be what SS are thinking about you reasons of application. All the best to you. Read all you can of these boards.
