New adoption support fund launched!

Anonymous September 11, 2013 11:19
Hello everyone, As you may already be aware the Government has just announced a £19.3 million fund to provide adoption support. You can read our press release and an adopter's view on the fund here: http://www.adoptionuk.org/press-media/current-press-releases We are getting quite a lot of coverage on it too inc page 10 of today's Times. Also: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-24037980 http://www.communitycare.co.uk/articles/11/09/2013/119478/government-announces-19.5m-funding-for-new-adoption-support-fund.htm The fund is great news for adopters and something that Adoption UK have been working towards for many years. We could not have achieved this influence without the support of our members and the wider adoption community. Naomi Naomi Evetts - Press Assistant

The government will make £2.1 BILLION in cuts to local authority in the next year (on top of cuts already made, some up to 40%) - cuts which are having/will have a devastating affect on services charged with protecting vulnerable children vs. The government pledging £19 MILLION to 'mop up' the inevitable neglect and abuse. Why even TRY to prevent a child from suffering when superficially 'mopping up' the affects of months/years of neglect and abuse is so much cheaper? Quite frankly it's infuriating.

I don't disagree with MGM's frustration - but I for one am very happy to hear this announcement. Of course it would be better for absolutely everyone to get what they need when they need it to help them to parent their children well enough so that those children do not need to taken into care and then onto permanence away from birth families - but - I can't see that any amount of money will stop the minority of children that do need to be adopted - mopping up? maybe . Still better to mop up with better equipment and expertise equally available throughout the UK (not just England)- rather than mopping up in the haphazard way that it has been done thus far.

Maybe the councils could stop throwing money away and spend it more wisely? I am on a working party in my council for a project involving children with special needs and there are all sorts of people attending these meetings, where really nothing much happens. When I worked in the private sector, someone would have been given this project to go and do and they would have done it in a few months - they would just have kept everyone informed by email and had meetings as required. And to top it all, they sent an email out for the latest meeting with a selection of dates, one of which was in the evening (supposedly to make it easier for parents to attend). I couldn't do that evening and chose one of the day times - and I was apparently the only one who did so. Everyone else went for the evening. And then I realised - it's because they will get overtime! Personally I am pleased that money for post adoption support is being ring - fenced - as long as the las don't dribble it away on meetings!
