Fast diet 5:2

piglethh September 9, 2013 23:05
On the old boards I posted a thread about feeling a bit fat and horrible since LO (6) has come . Being a singley I don't have time for the gym now. A couple of people mentioned they were on the 5:2 diet. How are people doing? With LO back at school I started it with two consecutive days (oops) last week and I am managing to skip lunch and modify breakfast and dinner so that LO doesn't notice. I don't have any scales so no idea if I have lost anything yet but I am finding it relatively easy to do (so far) and am feeling pretty positive about things. I even went to work late and went to the gym.

I'm about 5 weeks in and finding it surprisingly easy. Lost a bit more than 1/2st (would like to lose another stone). I have found that it has made me cut down generally on my other days, - that must surely help, - but having said that we had takeaway pizza at the w/e and ate waaay too much. I do feel I can have a bit of a blow out and then get back on track, whereas with WW (for example) a bad day would send me right off track.

DH's boss is doing this - he has been doing very well on the weightloss front, but they all keep their heads down on the 2 low cal days as he gets a bit snappy!

Ha- tried to reply but the new site ignored me... Reply went into the save button lost box... Am still at it! The 5:2, after a hard weekend of munching on lidl's new bakery pretzels I do a 4:3 week- to lose a 1lb you have to reduce overall weekly calories by 3,500 apparently - within the parameters of your body and metabolism etc. So I have lost 10lb on a good day and when the scales like me- it fluctuates by 2-3 lb and this is also due to the mechanism of insulin and so on on a fasting overnight thing... But overall it's working! Nothing else has for years! I have - 7 lb more I would love to shift- but I am now a loose 12 and have a size 10 pair of jeans I can wear again! Marvellous! X

I did really well on it, until I went on holiday and then had an injury that slowed me down----so more grazing etc. Am back on it and weight coming off slowly (1lb week overall) though looks better on fasting days. Can't manage two consecutive days, would be impossible to live with. In the long term, think it's a great way to lose weight, and GP says really good for keeping diabetes at bay because of the way metabolism works when on it.

I was on it until holidays. Lost over half a stone easily in 6 weeks. Ate a lot over holidays and now just starting again. Have a number of friends/people I know on it and they are all finding it successful and manageable.

I don't think I would do two consecutive days again as I was a bit grumpy by the end of day two. Although I haven't weighed myself my tummy feels flatter and I generally feel less bloated. It would be the dream to be in size 12 again!

How do you cope on the days you don't eat though? Don't you feel very lethargic and tired? When I don't eat enough I go very foggy and vacant and limp! Really can't imagine keeping up with Kipper on low blood sugar !

It's odd - really you don't get the symptoms of low sugar etc- as your body kicks in- yes you can be a bit hungry! 2-4 in the afternoon is my low spot- but it's only a couple of days- so not too hideous and not as grim as cutting down and feeling short changed 7 days a week! The work can happen overnight as the fasting is from last tea on say Monday to breakfast Wednesday- so no wonder weight is lost!!! Tis marvellous and works! X

I thought I would feel awful as I have had problems with blood sugar in the past, but, I think because I am following the advice on what to eat with the calories allowed it seems to work with no crashes. I couldn't do a skipping breakfast one though. I really would fall over then.

I thought you weren't supposed to do two consecutive days. That you were supposed to separate them?

No you are not. And yes you are. I was so desperate to start from the beginning of the school hols so the minute she went back I got carried away!

I am doing ok on it, in 6 weeks I've lost just under 1 stone. I find the fasting days (Monday and Wednesday) no different to the rest of the week with energy levels and concentration. I do find it hard to find interesting 500 cal meals so generally do healthy eating beans on wholemeal toast, sardines on toast or chicken salad so I keep looking for more choices.

Hi - good to hear all your positive reports. Hubby keen to do this but I am just unbearable if I am hungry. If I think that goodness knows how bad I'm actually am. ;) Anyway my question is ... Are you able to do exercise on any of the days ? I run a few times a week so keep my weight static but am still overweight. Thanks

I can exercise after I have had the small breakfast but I don't think I would have the energy later in the day.

I know someone who runs the same amount on 500 days. It took her a while to work up to it though. As in, routine of 5:2 in place for a month before she ran on the fast days (as it were).
