Advice on Pupil Premium Plus please

Dovestar June 6, 2018 18:02
Hi, We have an adopted 2 children our little girl very recently but we have had our son now, who is now in Year 4, since he was a baby. He has ADHD, Dyspraxia and a chromosome deletion with mild learning difficulties. I have tried to get hisschool to take his needs seriously but seem to be going round in circles. He doesn't have an EHCP and although I keep asking I cannot seem to get a straight answer about how the school is supporting him with his learning or how they are spending his Pupil Premium Plus (PPP) to benefit him. Am I being stupid here? I realise the PPP he receives is not ring fenced to him but how can I hold the school to account to make sure the £1900 of extra funding he comes with is actually helping him in some way? or what is the point of the extra funding? Can someone let me know what I can do, or what resources are out there to show the school best practice on how they should be spending PPP, not just for him but the other adopted children within school. Also is there a government directive that specifically relates to PPP? I would like to build a case and a body of evidence to give to them in a meeting to show them if possible. Thanks

Hi, like you say, the funding isn't ring fenced and you personally can't do much about that, other than perhaps speak to the virtual head for your area, who is supposed to take an interest in these things. You could also approach the governors. But I think you can also contact Ofsted about it. I do think you should consider applying for an ehc as this might cause school to put more thought into what they are doing for him, even if you are turned down.

Have you had a meeting with the SENCO - they should be able to tell you exactly how he’s being supported - also it will give you a chance to talk through the conditions he has and hiow that affects him in school in more detail - maybe there are things they are not aware of. Even though the ppp is not ringfenced for him whatever they are using it for should be something that benefits him - even if indirectly for example if it is used for staff training around attachment. The meeting should be the start of a dialogue as they should be reviewing his progress on a regular basis to see if what they are doing is making a difference. There should also be a governor with responsibikity for special needs - the parent governor should be able to give you the details.
