Graded to death and other ramblings

Do you know sometimes I feel like a good old moan, so excuse me if this is a bit of a vent. I went to parents evening last night. It was a short format one so only got to speak to one teacher, who was really positive about AS. Then I took a look at the report. Well, let's just say that the grades were rather low, and I started to worry about what AS would be able to do post-16. Then today AS bursts in with an exam paper he did in class marked 3 grades above the assessment in the report! Well done AS! But then that leaves me completely unsure about his post-16 choices. Sometimes I think he'll surprise as all and at other times I despair. Perhaps the school is just grading them to death, he is at the beginning of year 10 and already he is being given a predicted grade for the GCSEs. Is this normal at secondary schools?

Next up, I was just over-hearing AS on the PS4 chatted to friends and he said that when he asked to go and get a drink, one of his teachers hadn't wanted to allow it. (Now, I must admit AS is a bit annoying on this front, when at home he doesn't want to drink and then as soon as we leave the house he apparently needs a drink - sometimes I think it is just so he can spend my money in the shop!) Likewise at school I think getting a drink might well be a distraction. Anyway, more shocking was the teacher's reply. The teacher said he wondered if his parents ever gave him a drink and perhaps he ought to get the social workers round. I think it was a joke (which AS wasn't really perturbed about).....but really......so insensitve...words just.....

Grrrrr! I think feel furious on your behalf. It really bugs me how ignorant some people are. I would be straight onto school about the SW comment, completely inappropriate and potentially damaging and scary.

About the grades.... it’s common to predict that early, what I would do is make sure you get proper time with the school to understand where he’s genuinely at and what, if anything you should be doing to support.

And we’ll done him on beating their expectations in his test ?

Hi bluelizard,

Re the needing a drink before leaving the house, my ad does this but with the toilet - hardly goes during the day at home, but as soon as we need to go out she needs to go the loo and when out needs to know whether she will be able to go the loo at our destination - drives me nuts if i am honest. I finally realised that it was all down to anxiety - just wonder if this may be the problem with your AS? Re the teacher's comments - i would be contacting the teacher about this and pointing out how inappropriate it is in your AS's case. I think i would do it in more of a "gentle reminder" type of approach to begin with and see how that goes - if no change then escalate it in stronger terms.

best wishesxx
