how do you get an ebd schoold

abiee June 1, 2013 08:54
My DD has now got a statementwe got the proposal which stated that she needed full time 1-1 including break timesI had been talking with HT, school are very supportive and good at putting strategies in place. HT said that they have experimented with pulling DD''s 1-1 back slightly but straight away incidents started. So DD''s 1-1 is very close to her at all timesI do think this hinders any social development she could have, but i understand school because her outbursts can be very violentI have looked at a privately run ebd school. Its the only one close enough - about 35mins awayI liked it, only 6 to a class, on site therapeutic services and much more focus on resilience and esteem. Lots of outdoor activitiesThey take kids who are not considered able to be fostered or adopted and they can board - so the extreme end of behaviourHT and LA both think DD can be maintained in mainstreamno professional involved agrees with me about this school and without her being expelled (not possible with the 1-1) how on earth would i get her into the ebd schoolI want her to reach her full potential not just be maintained

congratulations on getting the statementwhen you say privately run, is this a question of the LA meeting the fees?

others may come along with better advicebut I've always found if you can out beaurocrat the beautrocats it gets you a long way. Personally I would start putting together as much documentation as you can - the violent and other incidents, what happens when the 1-1 gets pulled back. Ask the school if they would accept your DD, what they can do offer over and above the mainstream school and how this will benefit your AD, including out of the school environment, and if they would have a place for her. Ask them about outcomes for their children and long term benefits. Get all your evidence together in a documented form, compare what the mainstream and the EBD school can offer against what the statement says is requiredThere must be an appeals process, get your local Parent Partnership onside and ask if they will support you at hearings etcI think I mentioned in a previous post about dual registrations - might be worth looking at thatGood luck

Agree with Serrakunda about the Parent Partnership people, mine has been a huge help with all this. I was asked to express a preference for school at the end of the statement, and I said out local EBD school. It then went to a provision panel. If the provision panel had said 'no' she has to go to mainstream I think I could have appealed it. Been slightly easier for me because DD's school don't want her to stay, but even so , you want your DD to get an education, not just be prevented from doing any damage. I am actually very surprised that none of the profesionals involved with you can see the benefit of a special school, given the nature of her needs, and the fact that she has an EBD statement.

We are in a similar position. DS has been out of school for nearly 5 months and school don't want him back. Negotiation hasn't worked with our Local Authority, and we are now registering an Appeal with the SEND Tribunal. It costs £4k a year to educate your child in mainstream. Independent EBD schools are tens of thousands a year (£70K not unusual) so be prepared for a fight. Parent Partnership and IPSEA could sources of information and advice on your legal rights here.
