Advice Needed For Me & My Partner

lousurfer August 11, 2009 12:43
Hi there!I''m new to the forum and just wanted to say hi first before moving onto my question! My partner and myself have been together 5 and a half years and in 2007 we had my partner inseminated by a donor in order for us to have a baby as we lived in Ireland at the time where we could not be considered for IVF nor adoption. In Oct 2007 my partner gave birth to our beautiful daughter who is now 22 months old.I have obviously been there from conception and now, after we moved to the UK where I hail from, I would like to find out more about adopting my daughter so that she is legally my daughter.I have been advised that once we have become civil partners there should be no reason why I cannot adopt her under the same stepparent laws which apply to heterosexual couples.I would love to speak to any other gay couples in the same or similar situation as us.Thanks!!!

Hi there, welcome to the boards. My understanding is that as long as the people who currently have parental responsibility for the child i.e. birth mother and possibly sperm donor if named on the birth certificate do not object than you can be given joint parental responsibility without having to go through a formal adoption or even step parent adoption process. However, I'm not too sure how you actually do this it would be worth talking to a solicitor I'd have thought.I think there are quite a few couples in the same position, I know two others personally at the moment who are thinking about this.Feel free to pm me if you want. All the best
