Grandson # one

aprilshowers January 29, 2017 10:42
Saw grandson #one for the first time in over 3 and half years yesterday. He is now 5, my DS and his then gf were only 16, he walked away when he found out...we did not know, we found out when she was 8 months pregnant, DS made the usual comments of its not mine...she is a loose girl blah blah blah...he was kept informed by her of progress and then birth, he got upset that she chose name and why was he not consulted....yes. He acknowledged his son, we took him to visit, we took him to register bubs, she and bubs came to stay for xmas DS went back with her and they tried to parent....7 months and he was back here with us...she was upset and refused to let us see grandson...I persevered sent birthday Christmas and easter gifts and cards...she started sending me yearly photos then sent me a message stating that grandson was asking questions and could I send photo of us, I did, she asked could we all meet so that bubs could get to know us and for the first few visits she would stay with us until he is happy to be with us. Yesterday was that day, she has done a fantastic job of parenting him, he is polite, funny, loves animals especially spiders and snakes we had a fantastic day out at little zoo, he did not want to hug but that is fine its too soon. I will chat about the others later.

That sounds quite special after all the heartache you've had. Hopefully the relationship will grow from here on :-)

Good to hear about your lovely day :) it sounds really positive that his mum wants him to know who you are :) I couldn't imagine two nicer grandparents even if one is mr grumps ;) well done for sending those cards and keeping the thread going

thank you all, to be fair mr grumps is more hands on than me, after all when you are dealing with flakey people I have sort of learnt to keep my expectations low and just go with it, so sometimes I appear as a bit uncaring or blasé about things but I do have feelings for all my grandsons and worry about their future. My perserverence was inspired by Steps, who tirelessly kept communications going with her grandchildren and is now reaping the rewards of overnight visits.

Since this original post we have had two more visits both going well and more planned. DS is not happy that we are building up our relationship with grandson.... tough son, this is how its going to be, grandson is starting to ask questions about who his dad is, between us and his mum we are taking it slow, just said that daddy lives a long way away and don't see him often, that seems to work for now but will have to explain in more detail in an age appropriate way soon... was thinking of doing a little book just like we did when our children first moved in..grandson is the same age as our youngest was...a bit de je vie.
