Barnardos

Hello!I''m looking into becoming a foster carer and have contacted my LA and also Barnardo''s asking for information. So far the LA hasn''t replied, however Barnardo''s posted off a welcome pack immediately and I like the feel of them somehow. I was wanting to go down the LA route because I''m a bit uncomfortable with agencies profiting from misery and desperation but I''m not sure how Barnardo''s fits into the picture.Do they charge the LA to take kids off their hands or do they cover the fees with donations? And does anyone have any experience of Barnardo''s? Are you kept busy or are there long gaps between children? I''m in the Glasgow area if this helps.Any feedback at all would be appreciated.

generally all agencies, whether supported by donations or otherwise will charge the LA when children are placed. I think it probably costs on average at least three times as much for an agency placement (though as the fc you would not see that amount!, there is a fee for placing the child, as well as (usually) higher than LA fc fees to pay. some agencies do better than others in terms of how many children are placed. in simplistic terms voluntary agencies tendto be offered older, or more complex, or disabled children. but that is a very simplistic generalisation!

Just repeating the above really but yes in my area, Barnardos mainly with older kids and teens, some who have had multiple placement breakdowns (tho shudnt judge on that), and complex needs and behaviour. They do also have an excellent reputation for professional and supportive approach. Although they may initially be more challenging young people, for some they just need to find the right placement at the right time.

I have friends who foster through Barnardos in the Glasgow/west of Scotland area. They were LA carers but have found Barnardos to be much better. The Glasgow team have got a very good reputation. I think it can be harder to place children, my friends have 2 very young children both with complex needs. They are very well supported.

Just to add a little bit on from my experiance in Hearings - certainly in the East of Scotland it strikes me that whilst LA foster carers come along to Children's hearings themselves with no support when there is an egency involved the FC have a SW who comes along to support them especially when there are heated issues between BF and FC. Therefore there are sometimes two SW in the room - the childs and the FC. Secondly a lot of very experienced SW left the LA to join agencies when they started on the scene here. Sad but true. However there is no denying the VA do charge the LA a pretty penny.
