Summertime and sensory processing issues

aquilegia August 6, 2019 13:18

Anyone else looking forward to the autumn and cooler temperatures?

My little guy is really struggling. He is very heat intolerant, struggling in temperatures over 20 degrees. He hates getting sweaty skin, eyes are sensitive to sunlight but won't wear sunglasses, hates insects of any kind. He gets all floppy and grumpy and his skin goes so blotchy it looks like he is having an allergic reaction! ? copious amounts of ice cream/ lollies are in the freezer (not for the adults of course ?), wet wipes in fridge, fans, cotton clothes. Aaaargh when will it end?

Dreaming of warm jumpers, chilly walks and hot chocolate!

Hot versus cool weather. What camp are you in?

Sorry don't understand the question....

Things have been very excessive here all summer.... certainly not the norm.... any summer norm tbh ? so how can I comment? We have all struggled here even with no real sensory issues?!! ?

Hey ho, just trying to inject a bit of humour into the forums! Lots of our kids have sensory processing issues. Trying to make these forums work by sharing my experiences and reaching out to others! Never mind! ?

I'm in the middle camp - I don't like hot weather - much prefer pleasantly warm and sunny with a breeze - but to be honest I am ok with any weather that is not extreme and long lasting. I like a balance. But then I don't have sensory processing issues - that does sound really hard - and his issues sound extreme - what help has he been getting? (You may have said already in great detail and I have forgotten - so don't feel you have to repost the whole story) One thing you can be sure of - the hot weather will end!

Hi safia, yes my little guy really struggles. He is on the fasd spectrum and the general thought is this is related to central nervous system damage due to pre natal alcohol exposure. He cannot regulate his temperature very well. It's hard to see him struggle but he bears it with such humour bless him! He has a whole host of other challenges but the heat really is a biggie.

It feels very isolating seeing everyone enjoying the sunshine and my little guy not wanting to go out much. Very limiting what we can do as a family. Hence the wishing for cooler weather. But we try to make the best of it.

Was curious to see if anyone was having similar experiences.

My boy is the opposite - he barely seems to register the weather, hardly mentions being hot or cold, even when it's been as hot as it was recently. I put a fan in his room and talked to him about maybe not needing to wear long-sleeves!

For myself, I used to really struggle in hot weather, but then I lived for two years in Romania where it's usually in the mid to high 30s during the summer, and below freezing in the winter, so I got a bit more used to both extremes. I've acclimatised to British weather again in all the years since but I'm still better at coping with the heat than I used to be. It's the humidity that does it for me!
