Use of Isolation at secondary school

Hi everyone,

I was hoping to start a thread about this topic as this seems to be an ongoing thing for AS, and I hoped others have opinions, helpful information on this.

I think between AS's lack of maturity and his inability to quell his impulsiveness, he has ended up in isolation a fair few times. A couple of years ago, I was really concerned and wondered whether it would be a slippery slope to being excluded, but I think there are quite a few teachers who have been very supportive at school and things have gradually got better. But he still ends up in isolation 2-3 times a term.

Typical scenario, classmate talking and pestering AS, AS ignores him for a bit, then ends up talking to him (often to tell him to shut up). Teacher, of course, notices AS who is speaking last / the loudest and gives a warning. AS protests unfairness (he wasn't originally the person disturbing the lesson) - and into isolation he goes. (This is AS's telling of events)

It's almost like AS doesn't even see the build up and that he'll be put in isolation till it is too late, If you don't see that you are doing anything wrong, it's hard to accept a punishment. It is also hard to see a way to working towards it not happening..

Thankfully, AS doesn't seem to be that perturbed by the isolation itself, but I wonder whether he is missing vital lessons. I'm not sure how if the work he does in isolation is relevant. He told me he was "drawing" last time in isolation. He does Art as one of his options, but why was he "drawing" all day?

There have been a couple of articles in the Guardian recently about this, that are worth a read -

Do any of you have experience of isolation? How do your kids view it? Has anything worked to improve things for your kids? Are the teachers happy to discuss their behaviour policies with you and did that achieve anything?
