Person with a Prescribed Relationship

AmandaArcher August 20, 2020 10:52

Good morning everyone,

My father was adopted in 1950 and did not wish to find his birth parent/s. I fully respected his wishes and did not press the issue. However, my father passed away recently and I remain curious about his birth family.

I am aware that the law changed in 2014, which enables people related to an adopted person, as such a 'Person with a Prescribed Relationship', the right to locate birth family members. It might be a long shot, but I believe it's worth trying.

Does anyone have any advice, suggestions as to how I might start this process? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Amanda

P.S. Apologies if this is not the forum for this type of enquiry. However, if someone would be so kind as to provide a link/information for another forum where this type of enquiry would be more appropriate, this too would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Amanda,

Thanks so much for reaching out. Whether you are an adopted person looking for birth family or a relative of an adopted person (in your case) looking for birth family, we would always advocate that you have a good support network around you. So, talk to family and friends, if you can, about your plans and wishes.

Our web pages here https://www.adoptionuk.org/FAQs/tracing gives you a good starting point. You can also look for agencies in the area you live that will give you support on this journey.

We wish you well on this search and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes,

Charlotte (AUK)

Hello Charlotte,

Many thanks for the links! (Please excuse the delay in my reply, I wasn't expecting such a quick response).

You've given me lots to be getting on with and I'm looking forward to the start of this journey.

Very best wishes,

Amanda

Have you considered a dna test? Ancestry offer one that you can link to different parts of the country and to existing family trees. The accuracy isn't perfect, but it's good for sketching a background, or for comparing against other methods of tracing.

Hello Lettice,

Thank you for your reply and suggestion. I had considered this option if more traditional tracing attempts fail; especially when considering that records of my late father's adoption might not exist. Admittedly, I'm wary of handing over my DNA to strangers on the internet. It's definitely an option, more as a last resort though.

Best regards,

Amanda
