Primary School recommendations

Hi there, just wondering if anyone can recommend any good attachment friendly, inclusive primary schools with a robust SEND offering in the Gloucestershire, Worcestershire or Herefordshire area (like gold dust I'm sure!). Our son is 7 years old with a recent EHCP and a diagnosis of development trauma, FASD and possible SPD (just getting updated assessment!). Has all the usual behaviours associated with these and will become very dysregulated when highly anxious. Has struggled in current mainstream school for the past year and a half and despite best efforts it's clear there is a lack of SEND experience in supporting children with these needs (typical village school with limited knowledge and resources). Professionals supporting him all feel that mainstream is still the right choice for him but with a much more robust SEND support. Any information would be really helpful. Thanks x

Sorry nobody has been able to reply yet. I would start by having a look at bigger schools nearby, don't choose the posher areas, they are less used to dealing with kids who need extra support. It's worth visiting if you can because websites aren't always a good guide to the reality of the situation and people on the ground. Hope someone can be more specific. Best Wishes Pingu

Thanks Pingu for the feedback. It's trying to get the balance of not being too large as he struggles with number of children and noise levels and not being too small as these schools don't seem to have the same resources & experience. I totally agree with not choosing posher areas, we live in a relatively nice area and most of the primary schools are very "precious" and definitely can't cope with kids like my DS. We are just about to start our search so fingers crossed we can find a happy medium x

It could be worth contacting Virtual School to see if they know of any schools?

You need to go and visit the schools and see them for yourself. Every child is an individual and every child has their own needs. Speak to virtual schools, your adoption support team, families information service for a list of special schools that will cater for your sons needs. Then visit them. I'm a firm beliver in gut feeling... Ask lots of questions, don't worry about being a nosey/ pushy parent. Our job is to fight for our children and give them the best opportunities. Good luck! And don't hesitate to include looking at special schools as well as mainstream. The trend nowadays is to direct to mainstream unless that is a disaster, but some kids thrive at special school simply because they are not the bottom of the heap anymore, which helps their self esteem, and because the school staff are used to supporting the kids.
