Adopting siblings

The Roses August 28, 2022 20:49

Hello everyone

When you foster a child before the adoption goes through are you entitled to any fostering pay from the local authority. We are currently looking at our finances. We would love to adopt a set of 2 siblings but we think unfortunately financially we can just manage one. We both work full time but with the cost of living and child care costs on top we are just trying to figure it all out. We are going through a private agency but we wanted to know if we can have any help on top so we could offer 2 kids a home

unless you are adopting via the Foster to Adopt scheme, when a child is placed with you, you are not classed as a foster carer. As an adopter you are not entitled to foster payments or allowances.

Some LAs do give adoption allowances but these days they are hard to get and there usually needs to be some exceptional circumstances

You should qualify for adoption leave pay via your employer, some employers have enhanced schemes - have you looked at your employers’policies? Most employers now are enlightended and adoption policies should mirror maternity.

unless one of you is a high earner you should get child benefit, you may also qualify for universal credit if one or both of you need to reduce hours.

We have been asked to consider foster to adopt, we would love to give a home to siblings but as we are two women we wanted to take shared parental leave at the same time, my partner will get 90% of her wage for 6 weeks and I'll get £156.66 she earns a bit higher so this made sense and then we would both get £156.66 a week after this. We are probably going to be down on 50% of our pay, we can get child benefit and I will be taking 6-9 months off at least then probably with reduced hours after this and my partner will be taking 4 months off minimum. I was just wondering if any help if we wanted siblings rather that one child

In some cases there may be but it would be specific to those children and what additional needs they may have, whether they’re classed as hard to place (hate that description) etc but it wouldn’t be a given
