Transgender/Non-Binary Adopters

K-Eli-W December 14, 2021 02:13

Hello All, I was wondering if any of you are (or know of) adopters who are transgender/non-binary? I’m wondering if the acceptance of LGB parents has widely extended to transgender/non-binary parents too or if it’s good in some places and getting there slowly in others? Are there laws to prevent discrimination based on potential adopters’ genders in adoption? Thanks in advance :)

Hi

Didn't want you to remain without a response. I'm a cisgender lesbian adopter, so I don't have this experience personally. I have come across friends who identify as trans/non-binary/queer/genderfluid in the adoption world (and of course adoptees may be in any of these groups too).

You are probably aware of New Family Social - I'm no longer an active member, but it would be worth contacting them and asking this question as they may have better networks.

Sadly, I think that the heightened "moral panic" and media coverage of anti-trans campaigns has impacts everywhere. I've seen casual misinformed comments here, unfortunately, regarding support for JK Rowling's views, which illustrate that many people don't think of all LGBT people as part of this community. These boards are very quiet now and I don't think this would encourage many LGBT adopters/foster carers to come here unfortunately.
