New study: from being adopted to becoming a parent

onlineteamAUK August 12, 2019 13:49

A team at the University of East Anglia is studying the later lives of adoptive families: when adoptees become parents and adopters become grandparents. There is currently little known about how adopted people experience parenthood, and how adopters experience grandparenthood, and what support is valued and needed to support them when the next generation arrives.

The team are looking to interview 20 adopter grandfathers and 20 adopter grandmothers. They have most of the grandmothers they need, but still need to hear from grandfathers, including grandfathers who might care for their grandchildren and those who do not see/hear much from their adopted children and grandchildren. Adoptive fathers are often left out of research projects, but it is important to hear from grandfathers as well as grandmothers.

Did you adopt a child in England and Wales within the last 30 years? Does your adopted child have a child of their own? How do you feel about being a grandparent? Has becoming a grandparent brought up new issues for you or your family? Would you be willing to share your story?

The study has been designed with help from other adopters and we hope it feels safe for you to take part. Please see the attached information sheet that provides more information about the study, how to contact the research team and to take part.

The project is also now live on Twitter and Facebook including a video from Professor Beth Neil so you may wish to follow/share/post. f
