DNA and ancestry testing

Elliot September 12, 2021 16:16

Hi all

Without going into too much detail, there was always doubt as to who the birth father of our very young son was. He was never traced and birth mum not always willing to reveal partners.

From his appearance and features it suggests his father is likely not caucasian like his birth mother. I suspect that my son will likely ask, or be asked by others about his heritage.

Somebody suggested using a service like Ancestry Dna to find out what part of the world he may have genetic roots too (but with the linking with dna matches turned off, and anonymous details). I had this as a christmas present myself some years back and it was a great tool.

I guess I just want to be able to tell my son something about his roots and incorporate something into his life story...or better still if we can pinpoint a country or region specifically we can start ensuring he has some knowledge and exposure to that information and culture.

Has anybody done this?

Should I do it with such a young child or just wait until he is old enough to decide to do it himself?

Any advice appreciated?

I have done this for one of my adopted sons, and I’m planning on doing it for my other adopted son whose birth father remains unknown. However, we will do it when he is 3 years old since the test requires some saliva. We will then incorporate the information into his lifestory book. Regardless of the birth father being unknown, I think it is a lovely thing to do.
